Today it is a children’s outdoor playhouse and when the children’s interests change with the passing years the outdoor playhouse may be used as a studio for music, art, studying, and much more. After the children have left home to seek their fame and fortune, it most likely will become a shed for storage, hobbies, or other activities.

Imagination:

The playhouse which you build for your children becomes a building to be filled with a world of imagination. They will make up stories and play act their way through their inventive thinking. It is their place to be who they want to be in a world of magic and make believe.

This is not time wasted. The imaginings of your children may result in the invention of future products for more comfortable and affordable living. They may discover new chemical compounds for better health. New techniques may be invented for future farming of increased crop production. Better humanitarian justices for all peoples. The list for future needs changes with each new generation.

Elementary years:

In the children’s early years you can have the outside of the playhouse built as a gingerbread house, a palace, or a log cabin. Listen to your children as they will help you as to what they want the outside of their playhouse to be.

Woodworking:

The children offer the fantasy and you follow through with your woodworking skills. Choose any wood which is suitable for your area. I would recommend building with wood because it allows for easier remodeling.

Wood is also more cost effective because of its longevity and being able to recycle into other needs. As the children grow taller and need more space adding an addition is much easier.

If the building is constructed of plastic or metal, there are too many difficulties for remodeling. Free plans and plans for purchase are available for a children’s outdoor playhouse. Or you may wish to design your own.

Allow the children to place their toys, books, games, arts and crafts, and furniture as they would like to have it. I know you will be tempted to include your desires, but this is their playhouse. Do help by building shelves, tables and chairs or other support items which may be needed for their supplies.

Teenage years:

Within a short period of time they will become teenagers. Your careful planning with the original plans will make the transition rather easy. The interior may be replaced with bunk beds and curtains so they can have weekend pajama parties, listen to music or play video games, or overnight study sessions. The exterior will change to a more sophisticated appearance which may include shutters and a change in style.

Throughout the day this teenage hangout will be used for reading, studying, playing electronic games, practicing music lessons, and hanging out with their friends.

College years:

During the college years the interior and the exterior of the outdoor playhouse will physically change to include new adult interests. If attending a local college or returning home on school break this building which served as a playhouse for children is now a place to study, a studio for a budding artist, or whatever interests your adult child may have.

Young adults:

The children, now adults, are living their independent lives and their playhouse now becomes the shed design of your choice. What was once a children’s outdoor playhouse will now be a building to serve your needs and desires.

The parents:

You have gained much experience changing and remodeling the children’s outdoor playhouse and now it is your building.

Put your imagination to work and convert the children’s outdoor playhouse into a standard storage building, a garden shed, a hobby house, a man cave, or a retreat. It is your turn to have a playhouse which will serve your interests and activities.
