The golf course is a well manicured lawn on which players hit a small ball with a golf club and attempt to land the ball into a small hole located many yards from the starting point. What does it mean to play a round of golf?

Perhaps it may be better to say “golf a round” as the golf course is designed in a circular pattern. You check in at the club house where your tee is located. Then play 9 or 18 holes of golf. You and fellow golfers will be walking and playing in a large circle or round. The last hole is near the club house. Yes, this is where you started. The fairway can be considered as the largest playing area. The grass is well manicured and allows a clearly marked direction where you want the ball to travel. The golf ball will travel through the airway and land in the green. Fairway lengths vary from hole to hole. I think of the fairway as a highway.

The green is an extremely well manicured area surrounding the hole. The hole is the end target of a golf swing. I think of the green as being the parking lot for my golf ball.

If you hit the ball into the rough; you are in trouble. The rough is high grass which is on either side of the fairway and is designed as a penalty for missing the fairway. The penalty is the challenges you face to get the ball into the fairway. I think of the rough as being that area on either side of the highway which is not paved and the golf ball is stuck in the weeds.

What are bunkers and hazards?

Avoid bunkers. These are sand pits located at different sites of the golf course. Hazards are ponds, lakes, and other bodies of water including the ocean. These water areas are usually marked with red stakes. Obviously, the golf ball is very difficult to retrieve during the game and you are penalized one point.

What is the out-of-bounds area?

It is an area which is not part of the golf course. If the golf course is next to a residential area you cannot play the game from the backyard of a neighbor or from their flower or vegetable garden.
